Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are your cancellation policies?

Please see our Policies and Terms

  • What is the minimum number of people needed to reserve a trip?

The minimum number to ensure a trip departure is 4 people*. We require minimum numbers to ensure stability and paddle power for each raft.

*There is an 8 people minimum to book the Dore River.

If you have 1-3 people please contact. us with your preferred dates, times and type of trip you are looking for so that we can match you with other groups.

  • How many people will be on the tour?

We are a small business and currently would only operate a maximum of 3 boats on the Fraser Whitewater and Beaver and 2 boats on the Float or Dore.

Each trip must meet the minimum 4 participants to run.

  • What do I need to bring?

All gear required to do a day lesson or trip is provided unless you are bringing your own gear for kayak and SUP lessons. Please wear your swimsuit under your clothes. Have warm clothes and a towel for after the tour. A thin toque or hat for colder days can be worn under the helmet. Your belongings can be stored in our change facilities, in the office, on the bus or in your own car while you are on the river. Sunscreen is great on a hot day, but avoid putting it above or near your eyes. Remember your body will be mostly covered by our rafting layers and equipment.

  • Can I bring my own camera/GoPro?

We often say, “If you would be really sad to lose or break your personal item, then you should leave it on the bus”. You are free to bring your own GoPro on any trip, but understand we are not responsible for any lost or damage that could occur. If you are bringing your own GoPro, you may ask to use a helmet with a GoPro mount already secured. You may bring your own camera on the Scenic Float trip to capture the stunning mountain scenery and any possible wildlife sightings you may see.

Each whitewater trip is followed by a photographer who will get you some awesome shots that you can review and purchase for $20 after your trip.

  • Where do we meet?

    See our Directions Page

All Whitewater Rafting trips begin at the Stellar Base at 11974 Essen Rd, Fraser-Fort George, BC to meet your guides, sign waivers, and get gear for your trip.

Both Stand Up Paddle-boarding and Kayaking tours and lessons may begin at other locations, like Little Cranberry Lake or Kinbasket Lake Marina. See your Bookeo listing to confirm, or give us a call at 250-566-0040 to check.

  • Is there a place to change? A bathroom?

Yes, there are change tents at the Stellar Descents Base. There is a modest outhouse at the Base as well.

  • Can I wear glasses or contact lenses?

If your glasses are essential to being able to safely participate and see the amazing views please bring them along with a secure sports band. We can provide tape or string if needed. If your glasses are not essential please leave them in your car to avoid damaging or losing them.

Contact lenses shouldn’t impact your trip if you are comfortable swimming with them on. Please let your guide know you are using them.

  • What if it rains?

Our trips depart rain or shine. Remember, you’re going to get wet whether it comes from the sky or the river. If it rains, you will be provided with extra layers to keep you warm on the trip.

We do not operate in thunderstorms.

  • Should I tip my guide?

Tips are not expected but are certainly appreciated. If you think your guide did a wonderful job and would like to indicate that with a tip, it will be graciously accepted.

  • Do I need experience rafting or swimming?

No experience is necessary! We provide you with a Professional River Guide to guide you on your river or lake adventure. This includes an on-land pre-trip talk before your departure and practicing paddling on the water before the waves. We encourage those looking to tackle the Class IV Beaver or Dore River to have previous experience rafting in Class III. SUP and Kayak trips will be tailored to your level.

If you do not know how to swim that’s okay, we take many non-swimmers on the water every summer. If you have any hesitations, consider the Fraser Whitewater or Scenic Float trips. Please inform your guide that you are a weak swimmer the day of your trip. Only confident swimmers should tackle the Class IV Beaver or Dore Rivers..

  • I have medical concerns, what should I do?

Give us a call to make your booking and we can clarify any concerns you may have in advance. On the day please bring any medication you may need and inform your guide of any medical conditions.

  • What is your accessibility like? Do you provide adaptive programming?

The Stellar Descents Base has uneven ground but no steep hills or stairs to climb. The change tents have 3 steps to enter and exit. The outhouse is not wheelchair accessible. Vanessa McGibbon, one of the owners of Stellar Descents, has extensive experience working with people who have physical or cognitive disabilities. Please contact us directly to discuss your specific needs and how we can accommodate you.

  • What training do my guides have?

All of our guides are hired meeting or exceeding industry standards. They are all trained in Advanced River Rescue, First Aid, and hold a British Columbia Rafting License through the BCROA. SUP and Kayak instructors hold qualifications as well as specific training from Stellar’s main operators.

As well, Stellar Descents holds regular staff training on our local rivers in order to maintain excellent operation skills and knowledge of our rivers. You are in good hands.

  • Is it safe?

Our guides are certified and well-trained to mitigate risks in the river and lake environment and guide you through anything that may arise. All adventure activities and whitewater sports involve inherent risks, and while we cannot eliminate them, we are well trained in managing them. Stellar Descents has been operating for 22 years and in that time we have had no major injuries or accidents. If you are hesitant due to safety concerns, we recommend a lower class of river (e.g. The Fraser Family Whitewater section or Scenic Float trip) or to try a SUP Lake Tour.
